If you’re aspiring to become a hairstylist, one of the most beneficial steps is enrolling in a reputable cosmetology program. Cosmetology training enhances creativity, builds confidence, and prepares students for their licensing exam, which is essential if you want to work in a traditional setting, such as a salon or spa.
A beauty academy will provide students with many opportunities to guide them in pursuing successful beauty careers, whether they want to work in salons, freelance, or own a business.

What will you learn in a cosmetology program?

Most cosmetology programs design their curriculum to align with the material students need to attain their cosmetology license. Beauty schools typically offer segmented studies within cosmetology.

Hair styling skills

Students will learn advanced hair techniques, including cutting, coloring, and styling hair. In a classroom setting, they will develop their consulting skills and learn to identify different hair care needs for various hair types. Hair coloring is an art that students will continue to master in the student salon and in their professional careers.

Nail technology skills

As aspiring nail technicians, students will learn how to maintain a sanitary station and study safe practices that prevent infection. While cosmetology schools train students in basic nail care and manicures, a specialized nail training program will help future nail technicians master their art, from applying gel nails to honing their skills in nail art.

Esthetic beauty treatments

While cosmetology school exposes students to skincare treatments, an esthetics program trains students in advanced skincare techniques.
Each study will provide hands-on experience in the classroom and hair salons and prepare future beauty professionals for the beauty industry.

What are the licensing requirements?

The licensing requirements vary by state. In Washington state, you must complete 1,600 hours of coursework, and usually, more than 60% of those hours are dedicated to hands-on training hours.

Prior to enrollment, students must submit an application, pay the required fees, and be at least 17 years old. Some schools may permit students as young as 16. Most beauty schools will accept a high school diploma or a GED.

What jobs do beauty schools help you obtain?

At Evergreen Beauty College, we encourage our students to network at events and at the on-campus salon. Students will build clients at the salon while gaining invaluable experience and comprehensive training. We maintain current job boards to help students have an edge in their job placement.

Students will be prepared to pass their licensing exam upon graduation, which will help secure more job opportunities. Our advisors are also on standby to help with job placement assistance.

How long does a full-time cosmetology program take to complete?

This all depends on the program you’re going to and the state you’re residing in. At Evergreen Beauty College, the hair design program takes 1,600 to complete. Washington State requires 1,600 hours.

For those who want to complete their coursework in less than a year, we encourage our students to attend full-time. Part-time students can complete the program in a little over a year.
